Our topic this term has been Toys Now and Then. In English we have been reading the book ‘Lost in the Toy Museum’. We have written descriptions of the different characters and ‘Lost’ posters help find the missing toys. We went on a hunt around our outdoor area for Lost Posters to see which toys Mrs Thomas had lost. We have also thought about our own favourite toys and why we they are special to us. We had a very exciting day where we all brought our toys into school. We got to play with them and see each other’s’ toys.
Our topic on toys has given us a brilliant starting point for our history topic. We were able to look at toys in the past and were even lucky enough to have the Fleur de Lis museum in Faversham come in a bring some old toys to show us and for us to talk about. We have also had a chance to look at timelines and family trees.
In Maths we have been practising addition and subtraction. We started with simple problems, using objects in the classroom to help show our answers. As the term has gone on we have done lots of work on number bonds and writing number sentences to represent these. We have thought about fact families, e.g.
7+3=10
3+7=10
10-7=3
10-3=7
We have also been learning the names of 2d and 3s shapes and describing their properties.
We have been learning about the UK in geography. We have learnt about the four countries of the UK, we have also covered aerial photographs and different types of settlements.
In Art we have been working on a project called ‘funny faces’. We have been looking at lots of different portraits by different artists and using collage to make our own.
Our RE topic this term is Incarnation. In this topic we have been discussing the birth of Jesus and all things Christmassy. We have enjoyed learning about how Jesus’ birth informs how Christians celebrate Christmas and live their lives today.
Our topic in PSHE is celebrating differences. We have thought about those things that we have in common with our classmates and the differences too. We have thought about what bullying is and what we can do if we are being bullied.
We will celebrate our learning in Science about materials and their properties, and our DT topic ‘Shade and Shelter with a practical day, building Father Christmas a junk model sleigh to protect him from the weather! We will first need to test a range of different materials to help us decide what would be most suitable, then use our knowledge to build a sleigh!
We have also been having lots of rehearsals for our Nativity performance, and can’t wait to share it with you next week.
