Maths
In maths children have been deepening their understating of place value. Children have learnt how to read numbers up to 10,000,000. Children have learned how to order, compare and round these numbers. We have recently started our new topic looking at the four operation: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. In this topic children will look at factors, multiples, prime numbers and the rules of divisibility.
English
The class have been busy writing a newspaper article documenting a slave rebellion. The children have learnt some key features of a newspaper article and have included these in their own informative and engaging articles. Alongside this the children have learnt some important grammatical devises such as relative clauses and using colons for lists.
Reading
In reading, the children have been enjoying the novel ‘Holes’. We have been discussing the themes that arise in the story as well using the text to develop our reading skills.
Topic
Our topic ‘Maafa’ takes a closer look at the history of the Trans-Atlantic slave trade. During this topic the children have learnt about the continent of Africa and its people. As we become more familiar with the continent, its geography and its people we are also learning about its complicated past and the roll Great Britain played in this.
Science
In science, the class have been learning about circulation. The children have learnt about the function of the lungs and the heart and the role these vital organs play in transporting blood around the body. Children have measured their own pulses after exercise to and have also created a human model of the circulatory system in order to develop their understanding in this area.
Music
We have been taking a close look at Glenn Miller’s ‘In the Mood’ and analysing its instruments and rhythms. We have looked at other music from a similar era (1930s) and discussed the dances that often accompanied this music. We have had a go at dancing to this music as well as singing the songs ourselves.
