This term we have continued with our ‘coastlines’ focus in English and geography, with a particular emphasis on the human geography of seaside towns. We have written a fact file about Herne Bay, described how seaside artefacts and Herne Bay pier have changed over time, and are currently planning a persuasive email, encouraging tourists to visit Herne Bay. In our writing we are using commas to separate items in a list, adjectives to make our writing more interesting, and conjunctions to help us to express more complex ideas. In class we have enjoyed sharing Jeanne Willis’s The Blue Beyond and Roald Dahl’s Fantastic Mr Fox, as well as numerous non-fiction texts. These class books are in addition to our ‘reading practice sessions’ on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons, where the children read their phonics books in small groups with guidance and support from a teacher. We hope you have continued to enjoy listening to your child reading their phonics books to you, and that you have valued the opportunity to share their weekly ‘book for pleasure’ at home. Thank you for remembering to return both books each Monday so they can be used by other children.
In maths we have learnt all about measuring length and height using centimetres and metres, and have spent significant time beginning to learn our x10, x2 and x5 times tables, including the related division facts. We have now moved on to learning how to measure capacity using litres and millilitres, so it is essential that all children practise their times tables regularly at home (ideally daily) via the Times Tables Rock Stars website (log-on details were sent home last term). Children who would also appreciate extra support with their foundational maths skills are still able to access the Numbots website for additional practice with place value, addition and subtraction.
Plant survival is our focus in science this term, investigating what elements are essential for seed germination and growth, and observing how plants grow and change over time. We are exploring salvation in RE through the Easter story, are enjoying learning about rhythm, dynamics and pitch via Kilar’s Orawa in music, and in PSHE have explored how to stay healthy, including healthy eating, and appropriate use of medicines. Gymnastics and football have been our foci in PE, and in computing we have been learning how to use apps to generate pictograms. In DT we will shortly be learning how to make neat and accurate stitches, and in art we will be studying portraiture.
We look forward to seeing many of you at our WOW learning walk at the end of term, and hope that you enjoyed seeing the children’s amazing dioramas and related work during STEAM week; thank you for your ongoing support for your child’s learning.
