Writing
Year 6 have been using the text ‘A Monster Calls’ by Patrick Ness as inspiration for their own creative writing. We have been paying a close attention to our vocabulary and using precise words to capture exactly what is it we want to describe. In addition to this, we have been looking at new ways to structure our sentences to elevate the quality of our writing.
Maths
In maths we have started a new unit on fractions. We started by comparing and ordering fractions. We then moved on to adding and subtracting different types of fractions (mixed numbers, improper fractions, simple fractions etc). We have been abiding by the golden rule that we can only add and subtract fraction with the same denominator. We have therefore been working hard on strategies to convert fractions.
Reading
We are continuing to read the novel ‘Holes’. We are coming to the end of the story and we are looking forward to seeing the film adaption of the movie before Christmas.
Geography
We have started a new Geography unit called ‘Our World’. In this unit we have taken a closer look at climate zones, lines of longitude and latitude while also looking at the scale of different maps.
Music
We have been working hard on our rhythm and timing. We have been learning how to count in beats of 4 and how to add layers of melody which fit in time with the music.
History
In History we have been taking a closer look at the human experience of the slave trade. We learnt about how people were captured from Africa and sent to coastal fort before being shipped across the Atlantic. We will now start planning to write an emotive letter through the eyes of someone who experienced this terrible ordeal.
