Maths is lead by Ms Stickens.
Mathematics introduces children to concepts, skills and thinking strategies that are essential in everyday life and support learning across the curriculum. It helps children make sense of the numbers, patterns and shapes they see in the world around them, offers ways of handling data in an increasingly digital world and makes a crucial contribution to their development as successful learners.
Our vision for Numeracy is for children to receive ‘Learning Centered’ teaching, meaning that each element of whole school and classroom practice is designed with an understanding of how children learn best at its heart. Our positive teacher mindsets and strong subject knowledge are key to our student’s success in mathematics. Our staff have clear high expectations and there is an emphasis of the value of mathematics in our school and the outside world. Pupils are encouraged to build confidence and resilience through the teaching of numeracy.
At Teynham Parochial CE Primary School we teach Maths daily through adopting and adopting The White Rose Mastery scheme which follows the National Curriculum. We assess a child’s prior learning before we teach, then children have time to practise their skills and apply them to a different concept. Children delight in using mathematics to solve a problem, especially when it leads them to an unexpected discovery or new connections. As their confidence grows, they look for patterns, use logical reasoning, suggest solutions and try out different approaches to problems. Mathematics stimulates curiosity, fosters creativity and equips children with the skills they need in life beyond school.
At Teynham we strive to improve the children’s reasoning and problems solving skills by developing children’s ability to explain their answers mathematically, developing their use of key mathematical vocabulary. We wish to develop a mastery ethos, achieved through exploration, clarification, practice and application over time. We want children to be able to select which mathematical approach is most effective in different scenarios.
For home learning, teachers select key learning tasks
which children would have learnt in the week. Children will practice and master, supporting a deeper understanding. Children are participants of Times Table Rockstar’s and Numbots. All children at Teynham are given log ins and encouraged to use to support their maths learning.
Maths is a cross curricular subject and children are encouraged to make connections ]in other subjects such as Science, P.E and Design Technology.
We have a rigorous and shared understanding of all aspects of assessment. Our approach to assessment is at the heart of high-quality teaching and learning, inclusive of all abilities, and is used diagnostically for early and accurate identification of pupils’ needs, tailored support and intervention.
Methods for assessment are adapted, to ensure every pupil meets or exceeds expectations, but also so that pupils identified as vulnerable, with SEN or with disabilities are making good progress and are challenged appropriately.
We combine formative and summative assessments, using evidence accumulated from day to day mathematics teaching and learning, to provide rich evidence over time for our assessment judgements.
Maths is assessed continually. Children’s progress is tracked and White Rose end of block assessments are completed and recorded in all year groups. Teacher assessments are completed three times a year. National tests are completed in 6.
